Pelotrain/Race Nation Honda Port Elizabeth National Motocross Report

The 2nd  round of the South African National Motocross Championship was held at the Sandy track of Rover Motocross club in Port Elizabeth (PE)  this past weekend. The track is a total sand track and gets unbelievably rough and this year the promoters really did their work and it was the roughest I have seen it in years. Temperatures were in the 27’c with little wind.

After the 1st round in Durban with the team salvaging points  we went home and got all our ducks in a row and put in solid hours of training and testing on and off the bikes. Confident we loaded up and headed off to PE for the National.

Pro Mini:

Moto 1 saw Zane get a good start rounding the top 4 and proceeded to move into 3rd place early on behind KTM rider Nicholas Adams and leader Tristan Purdon of BadBoy Honda. Adams passed Purdon for the lead with Zane still in 3rd. Zane made his way past Purdon 10min into the moto and then into 1st passed Adams when he dropped it in the top section of the track. Zane from there was never challenged again and went onto take the moto win.

Moto2 saw Zane get the holeshot and lead the race until Adams made the pass and proceeded to put in really quick laps and pull lead with Zane running good laps in 2nd. With 5 laps to go Zane made some mistakes with his bike and 3rd place rider Purdon made the pass, Zane realising he needed to regain 2nd for the overall for the day made the pass back for and hold it to the line and earning a well fought overall for the day.

Once again being the only girl in the Pro Mini class Maria really rode incredible motos, Maria is having an amazing season to date and putting many young teenage boys to shame.

Moto 1 saw Maria get a good jump out the gate and get slotted into 5th position, Maria rode a good race only to be relegated to 7th with 3 laps to go, with 1 lap to go Maria moved into 6th where she finished the moto.

Moto 2 saw Maria get an 4th place start and hold that position until she lost it to KTM’s Bradley Cox and then to Honda Sandton’s Brandon Brydges where she went on to finish a respected 6th place and getting 6th overall for the day.

125 Highschool Class:

Calvin totally dominated both motos again this National going 1-1 and 1st overall for the day and is well on his way to reaching his goals set out for 2011 while becoming the clear favourite for this Championship title in 2011 and the way he is racing it seems to be on track for another #1 title.

MX2:

The deep sand of Rover will definitely work against Anthony on his 250F against the 2 strokes but with the track getting super rough a fast bike is not all you need, you need fitness to go the distances aswell and we all know Anthony has that in his back pocket.

Moto 1 saw Anthony round the 1st lap in 7th, picking of 3 riders moved him up to 4th where he finished off the moto.

Moto 2 saw Anthony round the 1st lap again in about 7th only to put his head down and charge. After moving up to 5th he saw Pro Action KTM rider Ryan Angilly and 3rd place in the Championship ahead Anthony put in some good laps to get onto Ryan’s wheel and apply the pressure. With Ryan tiring in the rough track with 4 laps to go Anthony passed Ryan for 4th where he finished the moto earning him 4th for the day and moves him now from 5th to 3rd in the Championship.

MX1:

Moto 1 saw Anthony get a good jump out the gate and round the corner in 5th, Anthony proceeded to pick off 1 rider then went into a battle royale with PortaShade Honda rider Sascha Naude. They were at each others throats until 2 laps to go when Anthony made the pass and moved into 3rd where he ended off the moto.

Moto 2 saw Anthony get a shocker start rounding off in 11th. After some encouragement on the pitboard Anthony set off picking off riders and by the end of the moto he had landed up in 3rd place giving him 3rd place overall for the day proving that you need to race to the finish line.

Being from Johannesburg Mike is a hard pack specialist and the sandy circuit of PE has never been kind to the speedster but with alot of time in the sand leading up to the event and it really showed and has given Mike great confidence for the event.

Moto1 saw Mike start from the outside due to a less than happy practice time.  Rounding the 1st lap in 8th Mike rode hard and put in some good laps and solid riding where

Moto2 saw Mike have a better gate pick and rounded the 1st lap in 2nd  where he held it for half the moto, Mike relinquished 2 places and came home in a strong 4th place.  A little upset with his 4th and not 2nd Mike still went on to finish a respected 5th overall for the day.

MX3:

Wayne Smith had a incident with a tree trackside during the week leading up to the National and managed to lose the battle which left him with 2 broken ribs and some early internal bleeding. After seeing the Dr Wayne decided to head to PE anyway and get whatever points he can.

Wayne rode 2 solid motos in pain to secure good results for the MX3 Championship and for someone who couldn’t cough prior to the motos really made the best of a bad situation. With 6 weeks until our next National Wayne has sufficient time to heal up and come back to his winning ways.

A great result overall for the team with the riders gaining much confidence and points towards their respected Championships.

The teams next National will be at the Melkbos track in Cape Town on the 23rd April.

I would like to personally thank the following sponsors for all their help and support, without them none of this would be achievable.
